• Kitty Kino / The Wide Country

As part of Foto Wien 2022, film director Kitty Kino will be showing landscape photographs from the Marchfeld region under the title "Das weite Land" (The Wide Countryside), documenting, on the one hand, inordinate land consumption, but on the other hand also the poetry of fixtures in the landscape such as wind turbines, which are essential for climate neutrality.

The exhibition was curated by Walter Seidl.

Kitty Kino / The Wide Country

  • Kitty Kino / The Far Country

The impressions of the Marchfeld shown are a tension between the colourful-dramatic moods of the impressive, sea-like landscape of the Marchfeld and its grey-cool exploitation: wind turbines in the sunset; irrigation systems in the play of rainbows; concrete deserts in whose puddles the sky is reflected. The fusions of natural spectacle and technical interventions give rise to (seemingly) poetic images and suggestive moods - romantic irony emerges.

In the light of climate change, the emotionality of the photos, which are reminiscent of landscape images of a saner world, should help to critically reflect on man's relationship with nature. Can the exploitation of the region be beautifully thought of, beautifully seen, beautifully photographed in this way - do we have to accept it? Or is resistance created, are ways out sought, is a new awareness created?

The title of the photo series DAS WEITE LAND also recalls Schnitzler's play in which the soul is compared to a vast country.
