The artist Karina Mendreczky was born in Budapest in 1988, since 2009 she lives and works in Vienna. She studied graphics, printmaking and time-based media at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and at Wimbledon College of Arts in London. In 2015 she received the award of the Kunsthalle Wien. Her works have been shown in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, most recently in an exhibition at the ISBN Books & Gallery in Budapest in 2020 under the title "A Whale of a Bad Time".
Karina Mendreczky always thinks of the media in a broader sense, so her installative works also include materials such as soap, ceramics, photographs or textiles. Her thematic focus is on the various forms of memory and the associated questions of identity - which gives her artistic practice a pressing topicality today. Her motifs evoke places or persons from her childhood that evoke an enigmatic familiarity, a strange recognition when viewed. In countless layers and the play with transparency and opacity, she visualizes the complex relationships between individual memory and collective memory far removed from any nostalgia. As shadows and shadows, as doublings and fragments, Karina Mendreczky creates figurations of the past that, through their immediate intimacy, draw us into the spell between then and now.
